When Sydney Trains needed to prepare its iconic XPT Trailer Cars for a major milestone, their 40-year anniversary event, they faced a classic asset management dilemma. The fleet required a high-durability branding upgrade, but taking rolling stock out of service for traditional repainting can cause massive operational delays. 

The deadline? Just seven days. 

The location? The busy Auburn Maintenance Facility. 

The partner chosen for the job? HIVIS Group. 

Here is how we delivered a flawless, rail-grade finish across six trailer cars on a razor-thin timeline. 

The Challenge: Speed, Precision, and Rail-Grade Durability 

Working within an operational rail environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols, but it also demands incredible efficiency. To meet the event deadline, our team had to apply premium wrap systems, execute digital colour-matching, and install feature graphics across six massive trailer cars - all without disrupting Sydney Trains’ daily maintenance workflows. 

Furthermore, the materials had to comply with strict transit standards, meaning they needed to look pristine on day one and withstand the harsh realities of daily track service, including weather and vandalism.

The Solution: Smart Engineering and Premium Materials 

To avoid the extensive downtime of a full repaint, HIVIS developed a clever, overlay-based installation strategy. By using high-performance 3M film systems, we were able to work directly over the existing painted elements. 

Our key project deliverables included:

• The Base Layer: Application of 132 meters of 3M 2080 Gloss Black wrap film.
• Perfect Colour Matching: We digitally matched a specified PPG paint colour, printing it across 92 meters of 3M IJ280 wrap film.
• Smart Overlays: Instead of stripping and repainting the existing painted stripes, we installed printed overlays directly over them, drastically reducing asset downtime.
• Heavy-Duty Protection: Every single square meter of vinyl was fully laminated with 3M 8528 Gloss Anti-Graffiti Clear to ensure long-term protection and easy maintenance.
• The Final Flourish: Precise application of profile-cut feature lettering and logos to unify the fleet's branding. 

Why the material matters

Rail environments are incredibly tough on graphics. By pairing premium 3M wrap films with an anti-graffiti laminate, we ensure the fleet stays vibrant and protected against vandalism for years to come.

By deploying an experienced installation team and utilizing high-tack, fast-install 3M technologies, HIVIS Group achieved a seamless finish across all six XPT cars.
