Why it’s important to minimise wash

Vessel wash occurs when boats travel through water at speeds that generate large waves. These waves can extend far from the boat's wake, causing various disruptions. In fragile coastal areas, the repeated action of waves against the shore can lead to erosion, which, over time, can severely damage natural landscapes, wildlife habitats, and infrastructure such as jetties and piers.

The wake can also disturb or even capsize smaller watercraft like rowboats, kayaks, or canoes. Swimmers and divers in the water are at risk from the sudden surges caused by boat wash. 

“Minimise wash” signs remind boaters to reduce speed and maintain awareness in these sensitive areas, ensuring their actions on the water do not endanger others or harm the environment.
